Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks (Our First Guest Review!!)

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.
But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo's empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

Safe Haven is exactly how it sounds; Katie is determined to find a safe haven for her heart, her mind, and her body.  Her husband, Kevin, was a loving and caring man throughout the course of their dating, right up to when they were on their honeymoon. Katie crossed a line only visible in Kevin’s head; he made her pay for it.  Although he wouldn’t allow her to have friends or leave the house without him, she remained a good wife.  She cleaned the house and prepared his meals exactly the way he liked them.  She did everything she could to not upset her husband.  She befriended the older couple across the street without Kevin knowing; he didn’t like them and wouldn’t have wanted her associating with them.  Visits with the elderly couple gave her the encouragement she needed to leave her husband.  She began stashing money, dollar by dollar, until she had enough.

After weeks of odd jobs and looking over her shoulder, she found herself in Southport, North Carolina.  She found a quaint place to live, she was hired at a busy restaurant in town as a waitress, she minded her own business and just focused on getting through each day – all the while knowing her husband would be looking for her; he wasn’t the sort of man to just let her leave and be free from him.  He would find her.  A woman named Jo moved into the little cottage next door to hers and they become friends.  Jo encouraged her to get to know the owner of the local store.  Alex was a great guy and everyone liked him.  She was nervous about this because she knew she was still married, but she was pulled to Alex by something stronger than either of them; she falls in love with him, and he with her.  She was finally in the kind of loving relationship she had always wanted and had always deserved.  Even after months went by, she knew she was never really completely safe, she continued to look over her shoulder, scanning the faces of everyone; her husband was still out there determined to find her.  She’s right, he hasn't given up and he finally manages to track her to South Port, North Carolina.

You’ll have to read the book for yourself to find out what happens once he finds her.

I always love any book that Nicholas Sparks writes.  This was a good one and I loved the characters.  Erin is just as sweet as any of the other women Nicholas Sparks has created.  It’s not quite the love story that some of his previous books are – of course, everyone knows The Notebook and The Lucky One.  However, Safe Haven is a good story and a recommended read.
